Targeting subdirectories but avoiding to target root naked domain

Situation: I need to redirect all my wordpress mysite.com/product-name URLS to mysite.com/new-folder/product-name. I'm using a redirect plugin that allows me to target URL and redirect them to where I want. Since product-name is an ever expanding list of URLs I went "negative" and created a lookahead that targets everything at / EXCEPT for subdirectories I don't want to redirect like so: ^(?!.*/(folder1|folder2|folder3))/.* My target URL is a dynamic construction of adding the sub-folder to any result outside of that list, like so: /new-folder/$1 This allows me to dynamically target anything mysite.com/product to mysite.com/new-folder/product My problem is that my root domain mysite.com is being fetched by the REGEX. How can I except it from this REGEX construction?
